Teaching Technology in Kinderland

My students need Chromebooks to learn how to utilize technology in and out of the classroom. I would like a mouse to attach to each of the laptops for adaptive learning.

My Students

My kindergarten classroom is not only a place to learn and grow, but also a place where my students can feel safe, loved, and happy. The students in my classroom come from many different cultures and backgrounds in a low socioeconomic city. My students face many challenges and little access to technology is one of them.

Many of my students come into the classroom never having used a computer before, and in our technology driven society it is detrimental to their education.

My Project

Technology is necessary to our society and educational system today. When my kindergarteners enter the classroom for the first time, many of them have used a smartphone, but they have never used a computer. They have used a touch-screen, but never a computer mouse. For better or worse, the students take standardized tests on a computer with a mouse, three times a year. Many of my students take their first test without prior knowledge of how to use a computer or a mouse. Needless to say, their test scores are not reflective of what the students actually know.

Three Chromebooks and three computer mice have the ability to change lives!

The three Chromebooks will be used to create a computer center in which my kindergarten students will learn to utilize a computer with a mouse to maximize their learning potential. I currently have two laptop computers in my room of twenty-six students. With the addition of three Chromebooks, a five computer center will be created to serve my students on a daily basis.

I will create a learning center that will provide my students the opportunity to gain the necessary skills and background knowledge they need to be more successful on their standardized tests the every time they take them. My students will be able to use the computer center daily to improve technology skills while building cross-curricular knowledge. We will use the Chromebooks to build reading, math, and even science skills on many programs and games we can use everyday.
