Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
It is important to teach students about the different cultural celebrations that occur within our school community and around the world. At our school, and in my own classroom, there are many English Language Learners and immigrant students who are proud of their culture, and I want to ensure they feel welcome and celebrated. Teaching my 4th graders about Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is one way to introduce them to this popular celebration and its meaning.
By reading my students a variety of books, having classroom discussions, and engaging in art projects geared toward the holiday, my ELLs and immigrant students will be able to share their family traditions while practicing English speaking and writing skills.
We will create a classroom altar, or ofrenda, with string lights and framed photos of their loved ones, which will allow my ELLs and immigrant students to practice social skills as they build it together. To culminate their learning, they will eat snacks that will give them the energy they need to create mini ofrendas of their own using the art materials.
