This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students with learning disabilities (LD) often lack automaticity of math facts and have procedural deficits which hinder their multi-step problem solving abilities. In addition, students with LD struggle with concepts that underlie procedures and struggle to understand abstract math symbols. Students with LD have immature metacognitive skills which in part makes them poor self-regulators (monitoring and evaluating one’s performance during a problem solving task). (Strickland, 2013)

Students require systematic explicit instruction, modeling, and think out loud strategies to address their procedural deficits while strengthening their metacognitive skills.

Students benefit from a concrete approach to problem solving and engaging with a multi-step process. With the use of these RC car kits students will work with a partner and practice multi-step problem solving using concrete objects. I will model the think out loud strategy throughout the process of building the car model, assisting students to complete the task. While doing this project students will practice attending to precision and persevere in solving a problem all while building on their metacognitive skills.
