it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have two classes of special needs children who come to my music room every week. These are children with autism who are joining a general education class (one primary and one intermediate) to help build their social skills, life skills and fine/gross motor skills.
I need valuable resources from an experienced music educator to guide me in providing the best possible education for my special needs students.
I would like to do more for these children as they navigate an environment than can be over stimulating, unengaging or even scary. The book, Teaching Music To Students With Special Needs, provides examples of real-life accounts of music educators' experiences, with a guide and reference manual that includes research-based curricular strategies which I can incorporate into my lesson planning. The book also provides hands-on, in the moment suggestions for student anxiety, field trips and performances, and assessment strategies. I would like to use this book to help guide me more in what to expect in the unexpected when I see students with autism in the music room. In addition to the curricular suggestions, the resource manual provides day to day lesson planning templates.
The book, Winding It Back, is a resource I will use to focus on the needs of all children, but with an emphasis on students with autism. It will help me take what is being learned/expected and wind it back to the basics of what each child needs in that moment to be successful and participating at their own level in my music room.
