Teaching Magnetism Through a Floating Earth and Levitating Platform

My students need a floating Earth, a levitating platform and visually striking materials to understand magnetism and Physics.

My Students

Remember the magic of science class when you were growing up? Physics opens up a world of wonder and excitement for young minds. While learning important concepts, we get to have fun with the coolest toys in school.

My students come from very diverse backgrounds and from the start I try to instill a sense of wonder and awe in science.

The magic of Physics comes alive in my room with interactive projects, hands-on labs, and mind blowing demos that reveal deep misconceptions most of us have about how things work. On the first day of school my students work together to try to understand how Lenz' Law works (without ever having been taught the concept). It's amazing to see the ideas that sprout forth on that first day. From then on, they are constantly challenged and must defend their positions with evidence.

My Project

My students will be able to form ideas about optics, rotational motion, magnetism, and electromagnetism with the fun and educational materials in this project. Through exciting demonstrations and insightful lessons I will be able to guide my student's learning about topics in Physics. The levitating platform uses strong magnets and a floating platform to allow objects up to 13 ounces to float on the platform. The Euler's disk will show concepts of rotational motion along with conservation of angular momentum and axial precession. The magnetically floating Earth will show students a spinning globe held firmly in a magnetic field. The magic mirage dome allows students to see an object in a space where the physical object doesn't reside. I have an older one at school that has many scratches and the effect is a bit diminished. I would like to add another fresh one to my arsenal of Physics toys that spark my students' imaginations.

I find that by engaging students with fun activities and demonstrations I can more fully reach them and communicate the science behind the "magic".

Once students start one of my courses they learn that I try to infuse a little fun, humor and excitement into the lessons. I hope you can help me continue to offer fun and innovating ways of lighting up my students' minds.
