My Students
I teach social studies to 13-20-year-olds with a variety of intellectual, emotional and behavioral disorders. Although my students have different abilities they are all required to pass the NYS global and U.S. regents exam to graduate.
The majority of the students live on campus or are from low-income inner-city households.
Some of these students have been placed in foster care due to neglect or traumatic home experiences. 95% of our school population receive free or reduced cost lunch. As a result, our school and our classrooms promote a more therapeutic environment for students to learn and grow.
My students are brilliant individuals who want to succeed. In order for my students to grow academically, socially, and mentally they require a more individualized approach. My students need access to supplies to help ease their anxiety in the classroom and to provide them with learning experiences that will help them to become successful members of society.
My Project
The donations I am seeking will go toward getting a document camera. All of my students are currently reading below grade level and need extra support in annotating and understanding the text. Since global and US history place a large emphasis on reading, the students extra support to help them master reading skills.
By using the document camera in the class, I will be able to project class readings and assignments.
During instruction, I will be able to demonstrate to the class how to annotate DBQ style questions, mentor essays, and regents questions. By using the document camera I will be able to show students where to highlight/ underline and what to write on their assignments. The document camera will also be used to record lessons for students to refer to later in the years when they begin reviewing for the upcoming state assessment.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
