Help me give my students the tools to be successful in the real world by learning functioning life skills in the classroom with the help of tools to incorporate cooking, budgeting and life skills.
My class is an outstanding group of special education students who love hands-on learning and technology. My students disabilities range from Autism, Intellectually disabled, Other health impairments, Traumatic brain injury, Emotionally disturbed, ADHD, ADD, Dyslexia and mild to moderate disabilities.
I have a wonderful group of kids who love to excel beyond everyone's expectations.
I teach students from 6th grade to 12th grade. My students are joyous and smiling even on bad days. I hope to find a way to help them succeed in everyday life.
My Project
This project is directed toward special needs students who will be using multiple life skill activities via hands on learning to help the students learn and grow. This project will help prepare students for real life situations once they have graduated and are functioning as adults on their own or to help a parent whom they may reside with.
This project will help my students begin learning how to function as well as possible with as little assistance as possible.
My students will learn real life skills through cooking a simple recipe each week. They will then copy the recipe and find the prices for each ingredient online. On Thursdays They will then use the play money to "buy" the food and use the air fryer,aprons, mixing tools and bowls to construct and cook the food. This is such an important skill for my special needs students to learn. The students will have a certain amount of money per recipe each week. The students will have to google the ingredients and pick the ingredients (brand) while staying within their price limit for the entire recipe.
The requested math and phonics manipulatives will be used during class time to increase their overall academic achievement. For example, we will use the play money to learn about ordering out, grocery shopping, purchases online and budgeting a bank account. The phonics sight words games will be used for a fun interactive learning experience to help with social interaction among peers in the classroom. High frequency words (sight words)are important in the process of reading. The different types of sight word activities for this project will keep my students engaged and less likely to be bored from repeating the same assignment. I love that my students will have options and different manipulatives to choose from.
