Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is the perfect melting pot of students. They range from different nationalities, languages and academic levels. I teach at a Title One school and approximately thirty to fifty percent of my students are English Language Learners at any given time.
Although my classroom is extremely diverse, we have a classroom climate of love and support.
My students do whatever they can to help each other succeed in all aspects of life, from student coursework to social and home skills. They provide a safe environment for each other.
My Project
The students will be reading the classic book, "The Watson's Go to Birmingham." At my Title One school, many of my students are focused not on school, but on basic needs. They are worried about food, shelter, family, etc. Their education comes after their other needs have been fulfilled. With this book, I will teach my students about life in the Civil war era and struggles of other children.
I will reach my students by teaching them social skills and strategies, while integrating language arts.
The book has a large emphasis on strong family bonds, perseverance and dealing with adversity in the face of tragedy. Many of my students deal with these things everyday, especially in the area they live in. I hope to provide students the ability to succeed in their lives, by giving them opportunities to relate to others that have persevered through trials.
