Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
LGBT issues might be THE civil rights issue of today's generation. I certainly feel that way. Yet looking around the libraries of our high schools, our literature doesn't reflect that one bit.
I teach in a low-income urban public school.
Most of the students live in such poverty that they qualify to receive both breakfast and lunch at school because their parents may not be able to feed them adequately. This always surprises people when you tell them that, because it has become normal to bemoan government handouts and blame poor people. But working at my school, you see that many of these kids' parents are just as hard-working as anyone, they just don't make living wages and don't have benefits. Needless to say, kids whose parents struggle to put food on the table also struggle to inform their children about societal issues going on in this country, and therefore our students are left out of the dominant discourse.
My Project
As an English teacher, if I want to include my kids in the conversation, and, quite frankly, broaden their exposure to LGBT issues, I need a book or a play with which to do it. I already have the curriculum "Teaching the Laramie Project: Bringing LGBT Issues Out of the Curricular Closet", which was written by Kimberley Gilles, the recent 2012 recipient of the California Teacher Association's Members Human Rights Award. She has asked me to be the first to teach this cutting edge curriculum, and I look forward to being on the front lines of raising awareness about LGBT issues.
I am requesting 30 copies of "The Laramie Project."
Thank you for considering my project.
If you are a proponent of LGBT awareness and support, this is probably the perfect place where you can enact real change, because that is what I am about every day I step into my classroom.
