I teach in a low-income urban public school. Most of the students live in such poverty that they qualify to receive both breakfast and lunch at school because their parents may not be able to feed them adequately. This always surprises people when you tell them that, because it has become normal to bemoan government handouts and blame poor people. But working at my school, you see that many of these kids' parents are just as hard-working as anyone, they just don't make living wages and don't have benefits. Needless to say, kids whose parents struggle to put food on the table also struggle to inform their children about societal issues going on in this country, and therefore our students are left out of the dominant discourse.
