Help me give my students ways to be creative and play! We are asking for clothing, kitchen toys, tools, legos, and items to help them learn through play.
I have amazing students from diverse and complicated backgrounds. Kids come into school each day with only part of their daily needs being met, making it a major accomplishment when they finish their work. My classroom, which is filled with energetic young students, needs dramatic play materials to allow them to be creative and have time to escape the daily academic pressures.
Some of my students don't have time to be kids.
They come to school and work extremely hard due to increasing standards and state pressures with only a short time at the end of the day to have time for unstructured and imaginative play. My students go to kindergarten for an entire day and I want them to learn and be challenged. I want them to learn how to create and pretend, which many don't know how to do because they spend quite a bit of time on devices or in front of screens. More than anything, I want to bring imagination and dreaming back into our schools.
I love teaching in this small town, and I want to give back to the kids who give so much to me.
My Project
Students are exhausted after a long, full day of kindergarten. All day they look forward to the end of the day because they know it is their time to be kids and have free time to unwind. I want students to have choices of play depending on what their interests are and what they have/haven't yet been exposed to.
Kids at this age learn through play.
I try to make most of my lessons fun and engaging and encourage students to explore while learning, but at the end of the day they are done with curriculum and testing. Yes, lots of testing at FIVE and SIX years old.
Having new, fun, and exciting toys for students to play with will help encourage their imaginations and give them opportunities to learn social-emotional skills, while getting excited about pretending and escaping reality.
I love technology, but I want my kids to see that using your imagination and interacting with others can be so much more engaging and beneficial in and out of the classroom. Students have a change to build relationships while they play which will filter into so many aspects of their lives.
