My Students

'Produce for Kids' are supporting Donors Choose projects from Florida that teach nutrition and wellness. Fantastic! The diet books in my school library are old, faded, and don't stress the importance of exercise. Please let's use this opportunity to reinvigorate our section about food and exercise.

Close your eyes and imagine kids at play.

What do you 'see'? Green grass? Skinny kids running after a ball? That may be true, in some cases. But I'd say that, for most kids, the ideal play session = sitting at a computer for hours. Now imagine kids eating their favorite meal. OK - you're ahead of me on this one. It's junk food, of course. Every morning, before I open up the library, I buy a cup of coffee at the convenience store across the road from school - and I see kids there buying chips, doughnuts and candy for breakfast, even though our school offers a free, healthy breakfast in the cafeteria. The children prefer the food in the convenience store. This generation loves its junk food.

My Project

As a school librarian, I need to make sure that our kids have access to lively, entertaining books that will teach them the value of healthy eating and exercise. Our current books are a little lackluster, and they don't stress exercise enough: they are from the days when the food pyramid didn't have that little guy running up the side, burning calories. Encouraged by the great matching offer from 'Produce for Kids', I have gone through the AKJ Books catalog on Donors Choose and chosen 25 colorful, interesting books on eating and exercise. All of the books are hardback. You need hardback books in a library! They are written for kids from four to fourteen. Our school is a K-8 Center (located in South Florida) so we need to appeal to a wide age range. I hope that these titles will reinvigorate our rather dowdy selection of books on nutrition and wellness.
