This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Welcome my students back to school in the fall of 2012 and encourage their reading and writing skills with a new all purpose teaching easel. Share in their joy as they engage with the teacher as she reads aloud from large versions of classic stories such as "Brown Bear" and "Polar Bear, Polar Bear."
My kindergarten students are a lively bunch of 5 and 6 year olds.
They are children who aspire to achieve great things if they are presented with the means to success. One of the challenges they face is poverty and not being exposed to things such as children's theater, puppets, books, and things that some others may take for granted. Often their first experience with books and classic stories is in their pre-K or kindergarten experience.
Our school has a full day kindergarten program that strives to teach children and expose them to core knowledge skills such as nursery rhymes, geography, proverbs (You can't teach an old dog new tricks) and skills that will prepare them for life that may have missed at home. Our school district is facing many challenges such as cuts and is not able to provide teachers with the necessary monies to provide high quality products to teach the children all these skills. Often even with a fund-raiser the money raised is not allocated to benefit the teacher.
My Project
Imagine the joy on the faces of the children who are listening to and engaging in classroom favorites such as "Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?" and "Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?" for the first time. Now Imagine that same book presented in large version format for students to hear and see the vivid images clearly. Even more students will be able to engage in story extender activities using the white board and magnetic surface of the easel such as retelling and sequencing the story with magnetic pieces.
Students' reading skills will blossom and so will their writing skills as this easel includes a magnetic write and wipe board with line on the reverse side that will allow the teacher to engage in whole and small group writing lessons. My students will be able to increase their reading and writing skills in a highly engaging and enjoyable way throughout the year with this easel.
My students deserve a chance to increase reading, writing and spelling abilities and just to experience the joy of the teacher reading aloud.
Even though the school district is making cuts and decreasing spending for the most important endeavor, students need to be educated. Your donations will help my students on the journey to becoming successful readers and writers and will expose them to learning they may not otherwise experience. A big book/writing easel will help students engage in reading
