My Project
I am always overwhelmed by the ways in which my students show up to school on an empty stomach. I often come out of pocket to provide snacks for my students with no intent of being reimbursed; I cannot expect them to do their best if their tummies are growling so loud that they can barely hear me speak. After all, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and many of them do not eat a thing until lunch time, or after school, so I do my best to have snacks to hold them over.
In addition, to making sure they're fed, it is important that students are comfortable.
I tell them all the time that I could not imagine being their age during these times. There is the pressure of social media, society and more to be perfect, this, or that and it can be mentally and emotionally exhausting. The independent reading area/calm corner in my classroom is a non-traditional classroom space for students to be surrounded by positive affirmations, tools to practice positive self-talk and more. I am missing bean bags from this area, as the Big Joe's I previously had have been sewn enough times, and thrown out for this school year. They PlayDoh will also be used as fidgets and distractions for students that are looking for ways to calm down, cope or simply take a much needed break.
Lastly, school chairs are UNCOMFORTABLE! I myself, cannot imagine sitting in those chairs for 6-7 hours daily. So, I've included cushions for students to use that may become very uncomfortable during the class period.
These are all items that I believe students can make great use of and are essential to their learning and warm, inviting classroom we have begin to cultivate thus far.
