This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the first time you read about Jem and Scout? Do you remember wondering who Boo Radley really was or when you finally understood the risk it was for Atticus to defend Tom?
My students are eleventh graders who care about issues of injustice and inequity.
Living in an urban area of New York State, they witness daily the challenges that face our society, the pressures of being an "upstander" rather than a bystander, and the need to advocate for social change. Many of my students are the first in their families to attend high school, and so they will be the first to graduate from high school and attend college.
My Project
By donating to this project, you will help provide fifty-five copies of the book, To Kill A Mockingbird. These books will help to further our discussion and debate. Our unit will examine issues around how our society today has changed, including our justice system, new "upstanders" in our society, and what we as members of today's society can do to advocate change.
Please support my students by providing them with a text that will not only engage them in a story but in debates, discussions, and writing to help them understand larger issues within the United States and their own city.
This challenging reading will also help prepare students for our state Regents exams, which is required for high school graduation, and leads to the path of college and success.
