Teaching in the Digital Age: iPads and Preschool

Help me give my students the opportunity to engage with technology as well as increase motor skills by using equipment such as iPads.

My Students

My students come from a rural community which could be described as a lower socioeconomic area. They are a diverse group of individuals which consists of students with speech needs, sensory issues, and one has a gastrostomy tube (feeding tube). Their ethnicities include: Black, White, and Native American.

My students gleefully and eagerly await their turn to interact with technology in the classroom.

My class is a vibrant bunch of 4 year olds who soak up everything they can.

My students beam with joy as they learn their letter names and sounds. They enjoy doing experiments and predicting outcomes. I am so proud of the vocabulary they are learning and using. I am proud to call them mine!

My Project

My classroom has 2 iPads and 2 cd players in the way of technology. My students are eager to learn and are ecstatic when they get a turn to use the iPad. But, with 20 students, their turn and time on the technology is very limited.

Using iPads as a teaching tool in Pre-K encompasses more than just the use of technology but collaboration and socialization as well.

iPads are mobile which makes it possible for students to engage in conversations and work together as they solve a puzzle or listen to an interactive story.

The use of iPads also increases vocabulary and socialization due to the fact that small groups of children can see the screen and the touchscreens are easily manipulated. This technology is in our world right now but it is also their future.
