Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students at Hollywood are earnest and hard-working. This diverse group of young people come from all over Los Angeles and bring with them their dreams and imaginations. They are open to new ideas and always ready to try and come up with unique solutions.
This creative and enthusiastic group responds to compelling topics about their diverse community and I aim to create a learning environment that nurtures their inclination for social justice.
Our school is located in the heart of Hollywood, California. Although storied and historic, this neighborhood is complicated. There exist striking disparities and homelessness. Although our students don't often have many of the economic opportunities they deserve- they bring with them the determination, ambition and optimism that makes Hollywood special.
My Project
These books will enhance the way we approach American history and when coupled with effective reading strategies, they will improve reading skills. Students will have the opportunity to connect to history though group reading and questioning. Those who are currently reluctant readers will get much needed practice while learning to think like an historian.
With these new books, students will have the chance to not only sharpen their reading skills but they will have the opportunity to examine our nations history through the lens of social change and resistance.
This will inspire students to become more active members of their community and their democracy.
This is not your grandfather’s textbook. It will engage and inspire students to question and more importantly, seek solutions to the challenges our country faces today. Over the last 18 months, my students have shown an impressive interest in US history and this project will give them the material they need to engage further and eventually grow into lifelong learners.
