This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are a combination of honors biology, college prep biology, forensics, anatomy and physiology, and ESL (English as a Second Language) students who are extremely hard-working and curious about the impact of science on them as individuals, as members of society, and their environment.
Our students live in a world filled with distractions, and it is part of our job as teachers to help them learn how to set aside distractions to focus on their tasks.
Many students, just like many adults, have a serious cell phone addiction. The need to be "connected" is seemingly irresistible. Learning techniques for focusing and removing distractions from their work space is a valuable life skill that they need to learn.
My Project
These pocket charts will allow us to help students who are easily distracted by their phones to have a safe place to keep them while they are in the classroom. The pocket chart will be situated in an area in the class that is inaccessible to students during the class period (for example, behind the teacher's desk) to keep student's property safe during class. Students will each be assigned a specific number where they can store their phone during class time.
This gives students an alternative to having their phones on their person, where they become a potential distraction during class time.
It also allows them to place them somewhere out of sight and safe so they do not worry about their property during the class. This allows them to focus on the lesson, as well as teaching them a strategy for minimizing distractions in other situations.
