This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am always looking for new and innovative ways to teach my students functional language and communication skills that overlap with their academic goals specifically financial literacy in the real world. This year I am servicing two fully self-contained life skills classrooms for students in grades 6-8th grade. These students need hands-on learning and functional activities to learn.
In order to do this, I would like to engage my students in a variety of baking and cooking lessons where my students can practice important financial literacy math and money skills as well as functional communication and real-life skills.
Cooking is a fun life skill. It also requires money to bake or cook food. My students will learn how to budget for cooking and baking supplies during these lessons. A set amount of money will be given to them to purchase all the items to complete the baking task. They will learn the importance of figuring out how much money it will cost to bake a meal or make snacks and determine if they have enough to purchase all the supplies. All the cooking and baking supplies, such as cooking pans, an air fryer, a new multipurpose grill, a melting pot as well as pots and pans will allow my students to make actual items after they make a grocery list and purchase the items. They will learn important money skills/financial literacy to be independent in the community such as supermarket costs and budgeting. Having a hands-on center where the kids actually get to make what they budget for and buy with real money will teach them about money, math, and functional life skills with money.
