Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
After every year of teaching I think I can't love the next group of kids more than this year's. I've been wrong every single year. It pains me to learn about some of their home lives and the environments they accept as normal. However, you would never know they were struggling if you saw them reading through a passage with a partner, solving a two-digit plus two-digit math problem or running around on the playground with their friends. It's moments like these that define these children.
I know these students come to school and it's a moment of respite for most to know they are safe, cared for and loved at a place that wants the best for them.
They are the most generous and honest group of students if you believe in them.
My Project
With every year of teaching I struggle to supply students with the materials they need to be successful. Not only is it pricey for one teacher to purchase but it's time consuming.
Simple supplies like glue sticks, crayons, scissors, whiteboards and markers all have a limited life in the classroom and it's difficult to continuously purchase these items for 30+ students every other month.
We use all these items on a daily basis and with our budget for purchasing supplies being cut in half this year - it will be difficult to provide students with quality materials that will make learning enjoyable and possible.
These are students who deserve more than what I can provide. I can't expect them to glue sentences from a story in sequential order if I can't provide them with working scissors and glue sticks.
More than half of students from low‑income households
