My Students

My students are an enthusiastic and diverse group of learners. We are a Title I urban Spanish Immersion school, and 100% of our school qualifies for free lunch due to having an overwhelming majority living below the poverty line.

My students are eager for new materials that are engaging, interesting, and relevant to them.

I am interested in building relationships, tolerance, friendships, and understanding of each other's diversity.

I teach two different classes of students their reading and writing half of the day, and they learn their science and math in Spanish. My mission is to inspire lifelong learners.

My Project

I have a very diverse class this year. My students are very interested in learning about our nation's history. These books follow three young girls who have been abandoned by their mother and are raised by their father with a little help from their grandmother.

My students find these book engaging and humorous as well as challenging and educational.

Unfortunately, I have to borrow them from other teachers and classrooms. I would like to have a small group set for my classroom.

The sisters travel to Los Angeles to meet their mother for the first time and find out that she is a member of the Black Panthers. They learn to become self sufficient. In the next book (this is a trilogy) they travel to the southern United States to see their grandmother and experience racism for the first time. This experience is very eye opening for my students and helps them grasp our nation's history.
