My Project
In my Pre-K classroom, the earlier children are introduced to compassion, the greater their capacity to grow into kind, empathetic individuals. With the support of My Big World and Science Spin magazines, my project will enable students to see the world through the eyes of others, work to alleviate suffering, and demonstrate their understanding of compassion in age-appropriate and meaningful ways.
Through nonfiction stories, videos, and SEL-aligned activities, My Big World introduces themes like kindness, friendship, and inclusion.
These resources give students opportunities to reflect on how others feel and why. We use puppets, visuals, and structured conversations to help children imagine what others are experiencing and practice responding with empathy.
By adding Science Spin, we create a powerful cross-curricular bridge between science and social-emotional learning. When students explore earth science topics like weather, plants, or farm-to-table systems, they also learn about real-world challenges such as food insecurity, natural disasters, and environmental change. These lessons naturally spark age-appropriate discussions around empathy and action. For example, when we learn about seasonal changes and extreme weather, students participate in coat and clothing drives to support families in need. When we explore how food gets from farm to table, we talk about hunger and support our school’s food pantry with compassion and purpose.
Once students begin to understand others’ feelings and needs, we take action. Classroom projects include making “feel better” cards, thank-you notes, and care kits. These hands-on activities connect science and SEL content to the real world, empowering children to become helpers in their communities.
To measure success, I use SEL observation checklists, student reflection drawings, and a classroom kindness board. These tools track growth in empathy, cooperation, and compassionate behavior. The digital resources from My Big World and Science Spin reinforce these lessons through songs, videos, and engaging group discussions.
