Teaching Compassion, Respect, and Cooperation through Novels
My students need books that will show the qualities of basic human decency such as compassion, cooperation, and respect through a variety of different literary genres.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from very diverse backgrounds and bring many special qualities to my classroom. As a Title 1 School, many of my students are on free and/or reduced lunch and often lack the basic supplies necessary to be successful students.
While we are all different, we have much to learn from each other.
As Gifted learners, my students seek challenges however lack the necessities when it comes to learning above and beyond what the general education curriculum calls for.
My Project
My students are very familiar with basic books which aren't very rich in themes that teach us about how to coexist as humans. One of my most important jobs as an educator is not only teaching reading and writing, but to teach basic human decency which so many students these days are lacking.
The books that I have selected to read with my students this school year and for years to come, cover themes which will instill compassion, cooperation, and respect for themselves and others.
Once students can connect to these novels, students will see though reading how other characters handle situations respectfully. Hopefully in turn, my students will see how compassion respect, and cooperation can be reciprocated and will learn to use the core values in their daily lives.
