My Students
My students are special in many ways. As their speech teacher, I work on improving a wide range of communication skills. Some of my students have difficulty expressing themselves socially. Some of my students have a limited vocabulary. Some of my students do not speak at all. I strive to find interesting and creative ways to motivate these children to express themselves and communicate effectively with the people around them.
The students I work with may have Autism, intellectual disabilities, or learning disabilities.
Whether these students are in specialized classrooms or are part of the general education setting, I work to address their needs in fun and engaging speech sessions. A majority of my students come from low socio-economic backgrounds. Despite the obstacles stacked against them, these students come to school ready and eager to learn.
My Project
My students with Autism are uniquely interested in animals. They enjoy learning about wild animals and making connections between animals and their homes. They show a keen interest in learning through hands-on materials they can touch and feel.
My students with Autism would benefit greatly from exciting new materials about animals and their habitats!
The Animal Match game is a perfect tool to stimulate language as well as to teach students about where wild animals live. Animal Bingo would be a fun way to reinforce and teach animal vocabulary. The LEGO Wild Animal set will get my students motivated to expand their sentences and talk about the animals they are making using LEGOs. In all of these activities, the topic I will focus on with my students will be to appreciate animals and to respect where they come from. I look forward to teaching my students more about compassion towards animals and their natural habitats through these materials!
