Teaching Compassion: Back to School Style

Help me give my students materials to create back to school kits for a successful year!

My Project

My students vary in both age and ability, ranging from kindergarten through 8th grade. One thing they all share is feeling nervous on the first day of school. This project invites my older students to create back-to-school packages for the kindergarten and first-grade students. By remembering their own first days and the importance of having supplies ready, they will learn to see the world through someone else’s eyes. This experience will foster empathy, compassion, and a stronger sense of community within our school. Students will receive a pencil case, with various materials, including pencils, sharpeners and more to create a personalized welcome package for a younger peer.

To measure their understanding, we will talk about compassion, and how we can be compassionate toward those in our communities.
