Welcome to rural Ohio. The school is in the center of our town. We are a recessed area, and everyone here knows that the ticket out of poverty is a good education. Our teachers are striving to provide this to our students.
Poverty shouldn't be found in education.
Our school should have all of the same resources as other schools.
All of our students get free breakfast daily. A high percentage receive free or reduced-price lunch. Although we are mainly a poverty-stricken area, parents still value education, the students still love to learn, and the teachers are challenged daily to bring the best educational experiences to these students.
Children are children. They want to learn. These children are no exception. When a lesson is engaging, they are like sponges.
My Project
Although I teach 4th grade, I plan on using these materials in small group settings to teach my students how to love a story, but at the same time, find purpose in the story. I am asking for novels, such as "Pictures of Hollis Woods," to use in small group circles to enhance their love of reading. I have ordered other award-winning children's books so I can read the books to the class and discuss the story elements and grammar. These books are meant to be read in one sitting. After reading books like "The Polar Express", I can then talk about story development, summarizing, and character analysis.
"We read to know we are not alone."—C S Lewis In today's society, books can be used as an escape for many of my students.
I am trying to purchase classroom sets of several books. Hopefully, by reading these books, the students will be exposed to a variety of writing styles.
