This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students walk into our classroom every day excited for the new challenges that await them that day. Each day they are reminded that they were selected to be in my class because I asked for the best students in the school and that's exactly what I got. I let them know that they can do anything if they believe in themselves as much as I believe in them.
I teach at a Title I school in Las Vegas where more than half of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
Many of their families struggle just to make ends meet. You would never know it from the passion and enthusiasm they show each morning when they come to our classroom. They want to be here because they know that if they give their best, they can achieve anything in life.
My Project
While academics are important, character education is equally as important in an elementary school. Traits like teamwork and leadership are often overlooked due to the rigors of state testing in reading and math.
I co-teach a flag football exploration that not only teaches children how to play the game, but also how to work as a team and how to be a leader.
This is a very popular exploration, which is outstanding, but due to that popularity, a majority of our materials have seen better days.
We are in need to new belts and flags, as well as other supplies like footballs and pinnie jerseys. We also want to teach children about rules and discipline, so it's necessary for us to have penalty flags so we can stop the game and discuss the importance of order and structure within the game. These materials will give us more time to worry about character education and less time worrying about finding a belt that actually works.
