This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
A typical day in my classroom is full of learning experiences. I don't provide my students with lessons; I provide them with learning experiences. By the end of the school year, I would love for all of my students to be full of the necessary information to make them successful moving forward.
My students are from the inner city.
When you look at them you may see children who have already led a hard life, and children who have no hope of a positive future because of the neighborhoods that they come from.
I would describe my school as a hidden gem. I think it provides a safe haven for children who are otherwise faced with tasks, responsibilities, and experiences that far exceed their years in maturity and experience. My school is the place where many of these children come for a meal, hug, serenity, and so much more.
Research has shown that students who are engaged in their learning through active participation and opportunities to work collaboratively with their peers tend to be more motivated to learn (Bandura,1977; Vygotsky, 1978). Collaborative Classroom research "indicates [that] successful learning also involves an interaction of the learner, the materials, the teacher, and the context" (NCREL, Tinzmann, Jones, Fennimore, Bakker, Fine, and Pierce, 1990).
My Project
The requested television and media equipment will be added to other resources that these student will have access to in a school sponsored after school center. The after school center will be a classroom that is transformed into a media room, so to speak. In this space, students will have computer access, a quiet place to do homework, or a space to watch an educational show. As we all know, children enjoy listening to music. The requested speaker will serve as a source of music listening and educational game playing during those after school hours.
The idea is that these students will not resort to hanging out in the streets of their rough neighborhood. They will hopefully focus more on their education than what is going on in the neighborhood.
The donations to this project (the television, speaker and keyboard) will improve my classroom by improving the focus and environment that my students are exposed to.
My hope is that the students will focus more on their work, and be able to make school the priority that it needs to be in their lives. This will change my students lives for the better by allowing them more focused time on positive activities and educational practices.
