My Students

Our second and third grade students are very inquisitive and love to compete! Like all kids they also love a good animated movie. We do our best to integrate reward days into their learning so they have the opportunity to "earn" time to spend how they choose.

Often times when they come into class they will ask me questions like "Can we do a Jeopardy review, so we can earn free time?" They love to learn by competing, and by playing games.

They love even more to earn time to use for their own purposes.

Which is what gave us the idea to sneak learning into things they don't always see as learning. It gives them a chance to show off what they know, what they've learned, and to learn new concepts and information without even seeing it as "Studying".

My Project

These materials will help my students not only learn basic economic principles, but also to apply those principles when the opportunity arises trying to win against their friends!

I will use the first 15 minutes of the children's movie "UP" to teach our 2nd and 3rd grade students about economic topics such as unlimited wants, limited resources, disposable income, debt, interest, opportunity costs, and the importance of an emergency fund.

I will then reinforce the concepts learned and discussed during this lesson by letting them apply these principals to many different board games centered around making smart financial decisions. Win or lose, we all win by teaching future adults about smart financial decision making.

I'll be using the extra fake money (Bills and Coins) for remediation purposes with students who are struggling.
