I am a Special Education teacher working with children who have Autism, ages 8-11, in a high needs area. One of the things I have noticed is that my students miss out on being typical kids. They are not allowed to play without constant supervision and therefore, most do not even know how to play. For the past year, my main teaching goal has been teaching and promoting independence through every day activities. Addition and subtraction often seem useless when an eleven year old child cannot tie their shoes, or button their own coat. Only one of my students can catch a ball. I am trying to create an active learning program. I am requesting a parachute and activity kit, tumble balls with an inflator, hoop activities and a learn to dress book, which will benefit students by providing necessary socialization and turn-taking skills while fostering a greater sense of independence. There are not enough occupational or physical therapists, gym, dance, music or art teachers to meet the needs of all the special education students at out school. Therefore, I am requesting hands on, engaging and tactile activities where I can provide my students with opportunities to play and be kids, while learning important life skills. Thank you in advance for your support!
