Teaching Animal Rights with The One and Only Ivan

My students need a class set of the novel The One and Only Ivan, along with the Audio CD and the National Geographic documentary The Urban Gorilla.

My Students

"What do you mean animals have rights?" "Where I come from, people don't really care about animals." "You let your dogs into your house?" How perplexing this culture is to my students! Literature helps us make sense of the world, and in this case, a new country and culture.

I teach a high school intermediate ESL course.

My class is comprised of recent immigrants and refugees. They arrive from all parts of the world. Some have spent their entire lives in refugee camps and have vivid memories of the sparse provisions. Far too many of them know about the realities of war. My job is teach them academic English as well as familiarize them with the different aspects of American culture.

My Project

I would like my students to read The One and Only Ivan, along with expository and opinion texts, and form an argument about animals in captivity. My hope is they will read this story and feel some type of sympathy for this large primate who is stuck in an enclosure in a shopping mall. I would like to address the timely topic of retiring elephants from the circus as well as the issue of using Orcas for human entertainment. The National Geographic documentary highlights the real "Ivan" but the author of the book chose to tell the story from the gorilla's point of view. Is this an effective means for the author to communicate her purpose? At the end of this unit, students will discuss the ethical issues regarding animals.

Animals' well-being is a topic that's important to Americans.

I hope students will read The One and Only Ivan and gain a general understanding current events regarding of the plight of large mammals. In addition, I hope this unit will help them consider the importance of animal conservation in their native country.
