Teaching and Promoting Tolerance from Real Life Stories of Survival
My students need books that are on their grade level. I'm teaching high school special education students who are generally on a grade level of 2-6 grade. These books are promoting tolerance and acceptance of others.
I am a special education teacher, and this is my thirteenth year teaching. This year I'm taking over a new position as the special education teacher at MVHS. I am teaching on the Navajo Nation/Reservation. Almost all of my students are Native American. Most live in poverty (99%) according to statistics.
The students I serve need support because they are struggling to get an education and make a good life for themselves in the global world we live in today.
They need a variety of learning opportunities that help them prepare for vocational training or a college degree.
Most of my students have reading levels between 2nd and 6th grade level. It is very important that I have materials that support these students' growth and learning, on their own reading levels, in literacy, math, and science. Being in a high school setting, I desperately need these books and learning tools. Your donation will help these wonderful Native American students who not only have disabilities in their learning, but also struggle on a day-to-day basis outside of school. Any amount will change lives!
My Project
This year I want to make the main focus of literacy on tolerance. After watching riots today in Virginia involving white nationalists who don't want the confederate statue removed, I can't believe the hate that still runs in the blood of certain "hate groups."
In the world today, we need to teach ALL students to live peacefully and have not just tolerance, but the ability to help each other.
These stories and books have so many excellent examples of struggle, courage, and survival. It is important that we not only gain knowledge, but also share and express our feelings about these stories. It is very important that I empower my students to have a voice and take a positive stand against hatred of groups not just in America, but in our global world.
