I work at a school where 61% of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch. My class is an integrated prekindergarten room, which consists of students aged three to five years old. The class consists of 30% students who have Individualized Education Plans. The students are learning through investigation, exploration, and building their curiosity through a science-based curriculum every day. Their success is vibrant through their dedication, perseverance, and above all their smiles through the numerous unit-learning projects we have completed.
This year we have had the amazing opportunity to publish another book called "If I Could Have a Pet." This activity had the students learning the research process to gain information about their chosen animal.
From visiting the library, the art teacher, taking research home to work on with our families, to finally getting the opportunity to present our class book and the students' non-fiction book, the students got to experience learning in a whole new way. Their in-depth learning, research, and engagement has enriched the student's love for learning. It is my ultimate goal through activities like this to keep enriching my students’ lives to help assist them in building the best educational foundation possible.
My Project
In my vpk integrated classroom, hands-on learning is essential. My instruction is adapted to meeting all learners needs from incorporating movement, independent work, and much more to keep the young students engaged and hands busy. In order to make this happen, the classroom is structured around rotations, centers, independent work stations, and body movement breaks.
During independent stations and rotations, activities are implemented to meet the students needs where they are at developmental giving them engaging and exciting learning activities.
The items in this project will increase the amount of centers and project-based learning that we can use in the classroom. Many of my students struggle with math skills and need daily practice with one-to-one correspondence, counting, number recognition, and more. Using the materials like Subitizing Centers and Activities for Pre-K and Kindergarten and Construction Math and Literacy Centers for Preschool, Pre-K, & Kindergarten, I will have more resources to implement to keep student engaged and meet all the diverse learning abilities present in my class and keep their love for learning flourishing.
Finally, I have asked for whole group learning activities like knockout games, finger flashlight, and more give my students access to movement activities to assist all learners fulfill to their fullest potential. All of these resources joined together will increase the daily learning that is so important in our classroom to give the students the best educational foundation as possible.
