My Students
I teach a wonderful group of 3 and 4-year-olds with Autism, developmental disorders, speech delays, and/or other similar needs in a self-contained special education Head Start preschool/PreK class in DC. Like all young children, my students are learning every day how to be at school and discovering what they love. For my students, though, some parts of this journey of discovery and education come with additional challenges, which they work hard to overcome.
While my students learn their ABCs, how to count, and prepare to read and write, they are also learning how to communicate, working on social interactions, and trying to find ways to manage and regulate challenging behaviors.
Every year, I get to be a part of their growth and discovery, and every year I am so proud of the personal, developmental, and academic progress each student makes.
My students work hard and are proud of the skills they learn. And like every other child, they each have things they love and things they don't love so much. Some favorite things in my class are cars, books (esp. Pete the Cat!), sensory toys (bubble wrap and pop-its!), dancing, Paw Patrol, Elmo, balls, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, and singing.
My Project
Every year, I spend hundreds of dollars out-of-pocket to purchase, download, print, and prepare resources from Teachers Pay Teachers, including visual vocabulary cards, adaptive books, supplemental material for thematic units, and communication and behavior tools.
A gift card for Teachers Pay Teachers will allow me to purchase the wonderful teacher-created materials I love without spending hundreds of my own dollars.
I am already short on time every day, so the visual materials other teachers have created are a huge help to supplement my own materials and teaching in my special education classroom. It will be an even bigger help to have funds to purchase some of the more robust materials that have been too high for my personal budget.
