My Students
My first graders come to school excited every day and, in Alaska, that is impressive. In the winter, they routinely face negative 30 plus degree days with smiles on their faces. I, too, come to school ready to teach and learn. First grade is truly a magical place to spend your days.
I am in my fifth year of teaching, and I have found my passion!
The first three years of my career, I taught fourth and then third grade. For the past two years I have been teaching first grade, and I am hooked. Every day I am inspired and surprised by my students. Watching a student enter the classroom without knowing letter names and sounds and then seeing the same student leave my classroom at the end of the year sounding out words, writing sentences independently, and reading is such a gift to witness. I could not ask for a better job.
My Project
Attending the I Teach 1st! conference would catapult my professional growth. The conference is four days of jam-packed sessions covering all content areas. The teachers and authors that present are experts in their field.
I hope to learn new research-based strategies for effectively teaching new content as well as reviewing and maintaining mastery of prior learning. I also hope to learn ways to better maximize the time I have with my students. For instance, I'd like to learn quick games or strategies I can use to engage students in learning during transition times. Finally, I'd like to learn better ways to integrate technology into my classroom in a meaningful way that will help my students succeed as 21st century learners.
Attending this conference will make me a more knowledgeable teacher and skilled practitioner.
The skills I gain during this week of intensive professional development will allow me to have a positive impact on students and fellow educators for years to come.
