This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As the new year has begun, I have realized both students and teachers do not have a calm, safe, and reflective space to work through the restorative process. Our current setting consists of 1 desk and 3 classroom chairs. It is not comfortable at all, and often leaves some students standing! Our students and teachers deserve a space where they can fully emerge themselves in the restorative process.
I am attempting to turn our current restorative and reflective space into one where students can be comfortable, and have the necessary tools to be calm and productive.
This space services the entire school, almost 1,000 students! The entire staff is also allowed to use this space, adding nearly 100 adults to that list. Our current space is empty, cold, and lacks the warmth to allow students to feel loved and supported. Our reflection process leader lacks a chair! This is the space where students are supposed to come and be led through their mental health concerns, conflicts with peers, and healing and restorative meetings between adults and children alike!
Through the purchase of flexible seating options, fidget tools, calming corner materials, posters, and adult seating options, we aim to totally re-do this space!
