This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Could you imagine being given the responsibility of instructing approximately 200 third and fourth grade students ... yet, without having teacher tools? Currently, as my students' World Language teacher, I don't have ink, dry erase markers, or even a pencil sharpener!

My third and fourth grade students are from one sociol-economic background...the one that qualifies 99% of them for free or reduced lunch.

We are in a school where approximately 95% of our students are Hispanic. Regardless of the odds working against us-low resources, unfortunate conditions, overcrowding in school-they all have the desire to learn...Spanish! You would think that by being Hispanic, they already know how to, but ... the truth is that most of them may be able to casually converse, but not read and/or write it! This challenge is extremely difficult in not only a district, but a school that doesn't have sufficient resources to provide tools for non core content teachers. With priority on the ISAT tests, leading to increased focus on Math and Reading, Spanish is often left out of the picture. But...our district provides highly qualified teachers...it's up to us to acquire all of the resources!

My Project

By providing a few tools for the teacher, all 200 students will have the minimum resources needed to be able to see the content being instructed. Ink for printed material to be copied for all, dry erase markers in various colors-to present information on the board for all to see, and a pencil sharpener to allow teacher and students to write the information they need.

We're extremely fortunate to-as a school district-be able to provide to our students the opportunity to become fully bilingual in English and Spanish.

CPS supports world language programs and provides highly qualified and endorsed teachers to schools that are in racially isolated and identifiable neighborhoods...Please help us acquire the resources to assist the teacher to teach.
