Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When you walk into my classroom you will hear students sharing in their group, and you will see students actively participating with adult guidance. My students are always busy being exposed to age-appropriate materials and Common Core standards aligned lessons. You will observe a fun learning zone.
I teach at a Title I school in California.
I am a K-2 special education teacher with 13 students with intellectual disabilities who participate in the alternate curriculum, Unique Learning System (ULS). This is my second year teaching and second year using this web-based alternate curriculum. My students have a variety of intellectual, physical and medical needs. Each student is unique and my approach varies depending on the student's needs. The majority of my students are English Language Learners. I am the only one in my school using the alternate curriculum. The majority of support is available on-line through a variety of web based trainings, videos, and documents through ULS. Having access to technology will give me the opportunity to attend on-line training and can also learn from colleagues who may not be in close proximity to me but can share their resources on-line.
My Project
I am requesting an iPad to access Professional Development on applications like iTunesU, special education dictionary, and iadvocate. I will also use the unique learning system website, N2y, to access monthly webinars and teacher support resources. I will use these and other sites to continue developing effective strategies with implementing the alternate curriculum in my classroom. I will also benefit from these applications and websites by networking with teachers who are working with similar student populations as I am. These courses will teach me how to use an iPad to teach my students who possess a variety of skills and needs. The professional development courses will help me grow in the area of curriculum implementation, student progress monitoring, transition planning, content presentation and behavior support for my students with intellectual disabilities.
The only way technology will be useful and meaningful in the classroom is if teachers know how to use them to meet students' needs.
I want to become knowledgeable of resources that will develop my effectiveness using technology in the classroom. I want to learn from the webinars (web based training) offered by ULS to learn strategies to implement my curriculum effectively. The more educated I am in using technology, the more I can advocate and guide towards success.
