My Students

My students are dedicated to empowering themselves through education and personal development. Our English Language Arts class is an environment of critical engagement with content that is culturally engaging and relevant to student interests. I have found that the element of student interest is essential for tapping in to student motivation and have witnessed the benefits this motivation has on student achievement.

My Project

"The Underground Railroad" by Colson Whitehead is a book is a modern work that incorporates science fiction elements to engage students in the plot and characters. This text will be used to supplement the 11th Grade ELA Curriculum in my district that is titled "The American Experience", and historically the texts have ignored many aspects of this experience.

This story deals with culturally relevant themes, and characters.

In particular, text will allow students to have many discussions in class about the work and the history that inspired it. This class set will go on to be used in my classroom for years to come.
