I teach a self-contained Special Education classroom where students have a diverse range of abilities and disabilities. All of my students are identified with Autism or a developmental disability, ADHD or a Speech Impairment, but that does not prevent them from doing their best. I am fortunate enough to have great parental support from my students' families.
We are a "Leader In Me" school where everyone can be a leader.
Everyone has genius, and we develop the whole child by building relationships and empowering students.
My students are in grades kindergarten through second and spend many years with me, so I really get to know what they need to perform their best learning. We also partner with other classes in our school for inclusion. We use a modified curriculum that teaches grade-level content at their level of understanding.
My Project
We follow a Leader in Me habit of "Work First, Then Play" My students are active. We work up strong appetites growing our brains and our bodies. Growing boys seem to have never satisfied bellies.
All of our students get free breakfast and lunch and we have a share fridge in the cafeteria, but it still isn't enough because my class is among the first to eat lunch, which means they feel a slump in the afternoon and they are HUNGRY!
I keep snacks available for the students when they need them, but we are running low on supplies. Often our families are unable to provide these things for the students since they are on fixed incomes. I also have a student with special medical needs and he needs gluten free snacks. He brings his own lunch, but has nothing left during snack time. He needs snacks he knows are safe to eat as we teach him to read labels.
