My Students

Our elementary school is an urban neighborhood school serving over 500 students! Students are from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds. Most are English Language learners from other countries who stumble in verbal communication, but excel with visual aides to make meaningful connections. My students are eager to learn despite the hardships they face in their everyday lives.

The classroom should be somewhere where everyone feels cared for, motivated, and eager to learn!

It is important in my job as an educator, that I help the students do just that!

My Project

Our fifth grade classroom has students at all academic levels. So I tend to use many Kagan structures, which are great for developing students' multiple intelligences such as the role playing cards or one stay and two stray. In both structures the students are responsible for the teaching. I have found that students who believe that they will have to teach material to others remember more information. I love this strategy because all students are engaged and it creates some wonderful discussion. So once a students has shown mastery, they can become the "teacher" and lead a small group. This project will provide a chair that is adjustable for both the adult teacher and the student "teacher".

When students think they will have to teach, the research states, they put themselves into the mindset of a teacher.

That mindset causes them to use more efficient learning strategies, such as organizing material, weighing the importance of different concepts and focusing on the main points. This chair will help the "teacher" to feel confident and a little special.
