My Project
Music brings a classroom alive in a way that few activities can. I teach in a 3K-fifth grade, public elementary school with a diverse population of about twelve hundred students. My students are generally from low socioeconomic status immigrant families from all corners of the globe. The ability to participate in a music ensemble, to play an instrument or sing, is a unique opportunity that fosters social emotional expression and learning.
The carpet squares will give us a comfortable place to sit.
The lung demonstrator helps to teach proper breath technique to singers, allowing them to visualize how their diaphragm works. The lung demonstrator is a glass dome with two balloons representing the lungs. When you pull down on the rubber sheath that represents the diaphragm on the bottom of the dome, it inflates the lungs. This dynamic and tactile representation of how breathing works, helps young singers to really understand how important "belly breathing" is to supporting the voice.
I have seen music not only enrich my students' lives, but also give those who may not excel in other areas a chance to shine. This is why, when we live in a world where music is often the first on the fiscal chopping block and we have all endured a collective trauma with the pandemic, it is so important to keep such opportunities alive for our children.
