Help me give my students opportunities to learn and work in small groups with their peers using center based activities and be a valued member of the classroom community.
My second grade class consists of 22 students, some of whom are considered special needs students and English Language Learners. This year will be different from the past years in that all my students with special needs will be in my classroom for the entire day, learning, collaborating and interacting along side their peers.
My classroom will be a place where students treat one another with respect, regardless of social, behavioral, and/or academic challenges that a student(s) may have.
I will be implementing inclusionary strategies in all my lessons for all subjects. In doing so, students will feel appreciated and valued as an important member of the class.
My Project
Pulling students into small groups is a daily routine, whether I am teaching reading, writing, math, social studies, or science. It is a way for me to focus on the needs of each student and provide additional practice on the specific skills students are having difficulty with.
The dry erase board stand will be an important tool to be used in a small group setting for students to demonstrate their understanding of skills.
The days of students sitting and listening to the teacher explain how to do something are gone! Since the stand sits low, students can write and/or use magnetic manipulatives as well to further their learning and be more accountable. The math manipulatives will help students solve everyday math problems using their critical thinking skills.
As students work in small group, they will also need to be sensitive to the needs of their peers. The literature set will help the students appreciate one another and foster a classroom where diversity is welcomed.
