This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is dedicated to working with students with moderate to severe disabilities ages 16-22. Our school is a transition center that assists students in gaining practical experience in a variety of settings including vocational, independent living and social learning. Students work in their vocational classes at our main campus to gain useful skills and then are able to attend our other campus which offers on the job experience in a variety of settings in our students communities.
Some of the classes we offer are car wash, cafe, retail, horticulture, and custodial.
Students also have the opportunity to work at many different job sites within their communities. My focus for my projects will be in the area of art and custodial. I teach one of the art classes at our school and I take my students to a job site for half of the day at local pet resort.
My Project
My students spend part of their day volunteering their time at a pet resort. The students work on valuable skills at this site that will benefit them for future employment and in everyday life. At the job site the students clean dog suites, mop floors, sanitize kitchens and play with some pets.
We can't learn to sweep without a broom!
My students need materials to learn their custodial skills in school so they can wow our job site supervisors when in the community. These skills will benefit our students at their job sites but will also help our students learn to be more independent at home with cleaning tasks.
