"The future of the world is in my classroom today," Ivan Welton Fitzwater.
I teach an amazing group of first-grade students.
The twenty-two boys and girls who make up my first-grade class are wonderful boys and girls who love learning. They are all at varying levels of learning, but working hard every day to grow as readers, writers, and young mathematicians and scientists.
There are students with special needs and students who are working hard just to learn the English language. There are students who find school a struggle and students who are considered gifted in reading and math and need a challenge. The students in my class are also very diverse in their economic backgrounds, with many of them struggling to simply get basic needs.
My Project
Teaching money skills to first graders can be very hard. They need stories, games, and hands-on activities that teach about money. The books and games I have requested will help to improve the financial literacy skills of my students. The hands-on materials available for them to use will increase their skills and knowledge, by allowing them to practice making change and counting money. Not only can my students use these materials during center time, they will be able to use them during whole group and small group instruction. My students love to listen to me read, and the books I have chosen will reinforce the money and financial skills we are learning in class. They will learn skills that they will use for years to come.
In our classroom we use a class rewards store, so by learning more about how money works my students will begin to understand more about their purchases.
This project will help to show my students that having money doesn't just mean spending money.
