Teach Me About Money, Honey!

My Students

Take a moment to think about your kindergarten experience. Did you just get a feeling of nostalgia, too? Kindergarten was an amazing and fun time that taught you the foundations of reading, writing, and math. My students are getting that same experience, but we are in need of materials that will help us learn financial literacy skills so we can have the foundations that will prepare us for the more complicated things ahead.

The children I teach are energetic, wonderful, hardworking students.

Some of them come from situations that no one should ever experience. They impress me every day with their awesome attitudes and desire to learn. We are a full day kindergarten class at a Title I school. Most of our students qualify for the free breakfast and lunch program. The student population is 33% Caucasian, 26% Hispanic, 12% Asian, 11% African American, and 28% other.

My Project

The infamous Swiss psychologist, Jean Piaget once said, "Children require long, uninterrupted periods of play and exploration." This statement could not be truer! My students learn best through play and while they are having fun. This project will give my students an opportunity to play with money, and also grocery shop using the dramatic play items. The register has a calculator, and the digital display will give them a chance to reinforce their adding and subtracting while they ring up purchases. The money puzzles and the counting manipulatives will reinforce the students' number sense.

The possession of these specific skills will prepare them to make informed and effective decisions with all of their financial resources later in life.

It is very important that my students get the foundations they need in order to be successful!
