My Students
My students come from a mixed group of socioeconomic back grounds. Over 90% receive free or reduced-price lunch. A small portion of student have no outside experiences outside our state and the majority have never left the island of Kona or been on an airplane. They love learning and really want to be in school.
My Project
Our School is an "AVID" school. AVID is a college and career readiness philosophy. It teaches children how to organize their daily classwork and homework. We use binders and divider tabs to teach them to file reading stories, spelling lists, phonics practice sheets, word lists and math strategies teaching sheets. The binder is an on going organizational tool that is used all year long. Students learn to file their work in their binders using the tabs as reference to place all work in the correct location. The binders are also a communication tool for their parents and help make HW completion routines easy. The use of Avid binder in first grade helps us teach organizational skills that will set them up for reaching their learning in future grades. It is amazing that children this young thrive using these binders.
