Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Students come to school from various lived experiences, and home environments, and with diverse perspectives about how their day will go. Regardless, students come to school and work hard to benefit from what school and caring staff members have to offer. Many times, when I ask to meet with students privately or in small groups, they automatically go on the defense and think that they are in trouble. Some have been conditioned to believe that a private meeting with staff members means that they have done something wrong or are lacking in some way.
In recognizing that prior school experiences shape and color the possibilities for future ones, providing a space of comfort, connection, care, and community for students is essential.
For this project, I am requesting an electric tea kettle, tea packets, and related items to create a tea station, which will allow me to offer my students a cup of tea to warm them up (literally), promote a sense of belonging, help them relax, make way for productive conversation and collaboration, and enhance the environment.
