This Oregon middle school (grades 6-8) library had its' budget slashed in half this year and we are at maximum capacity as far as student population goes.

Thanks to the local community college bringing in Greg Mortenson author of Three Cups of Tea, students will have an opportunity to hear him speak at one of our local high schools. These students will be chosen by having the opportunity to read the book and also create a project describing how the book and the Pennies for Peace campaign (which raises money for schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan) has affected them. We need many copies of the books so that classrooms can rotate reading the book and we can have a parent/child book club in the library so as many students as possible can participate and experience this middle eastern culture that is so often in the headlines. The story ties closely to the curriculum at each grade level so these books will be used year after year. Our hope for the Pennies for Peace campaign is to bring another level of community to our school and our school district.

By providing our students with these copies of the Three Cups of Tea book, students will hold a key to unlock their potential to make a huge difference in the lives of students who don't have the same opportunities as we have and have understanding of other cultures which is a huge piece of the middle school social studies curriculum.
