Task Boxes for Students With Autism

Help me give my students a task box library for their school. I am helping create a library of task boxes, tools and adaptive books for teachers to check out to use in their classroom.

My Students

I work at a center based school for students with autism. The students at this school are in grades K-12, and all have severe autism. Many students are non-verbal, and need assistance in most areas of their lives. The students are referred to my school from 33 local school districts, because their school was not the right fit for them.

For many students at my school, just sitting at the table to complete a task is a huge accomplishment!

My students need a curriculum that focuses on life and work skills that promote independence. They feel pride when they understand what is expected of them and are able to complete tasks. My students do best with a predictable routine and schedule. With the right supports in place, they are capable of great things!

My Project

Task boxes are boxes that contain materials needed to teach a student a task or skill. They include visual directions to help the student complete the task independently. Task boxes promote independence, and reduce the need for verbal directions (people with autism are better at learning visually than verbally). Task boxes are meant to be easy enough that the student can do them without stress, and give them confidence. (https://www.merakilane.com/hands-learning-special-needs-kids-30-task-boxes-autism/)

The great thing about task boxes is that they can be used for all age levels!

The boxes will be tailored for students with varying abilities and needs. They will incorporate life skills, vocational skills, reading and math. The use of task boxes is an important part of implementing the TEACCH (evidence based) program into classrooms for students with autism.

The goal for creating this task box library for our school is two-fold. I would like to promote independence and boost the confidence of my school's students. Secondly, I would like promote using evidence based practices in all classrooms, and encourage teachers to use similar teaching techniques. This will help create the predictable, structured environment that students need when changing teachers.

Teachers will be able to check out the boxes one week at a time. The library will be ran by mine and another teacher's classrooms. The boxes will include an itemized list of what is in the box, notes for the teacher, data sheets, and visual directions for the tasks.

Most items for task boxes can be purchased at the Dollar Tree, TeachersPayTeachers, and made at home. The items I requested are more expensive, but I have tried them all in my classroom with great success. They are very popular with my students, and I know that they will be used throughout the school!
